Stage 2 · Add & subtract strategies
Making ten
Make 10 first, then add what's left.
How to do it
Method
Make 10 first, then add what's left
8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 10 + 3 = 13
Full working
Split 5 into 2 and 3: 8 + 2 = 10, 10 + 3 = 13
In full
Fill the bigger number up to ten by splitting the smaller one: 8 + 5 → eight needs 2 to reach ten, so split the 5 into 2 and 3 → 8+2=10, then 10+3=13. Make the ten first, then add what's left.
Worked examples
Have a go first, then open each one for the answer and the working.
Example 1
5 + 8
Show the answer and working
Answer: 5 + 8 = 13
8 is 2 short of ten, so split 5 into 2 and 3: 8 + 2 = 10, 10 + 3 = 13
Example 2
5 + 6
Show the answer and working
Answer: 5 + 6 = 11
6 is 4 short of ten, so split 5 into 4 and 1: 6 + 4 = 10, 10 + 1 = 11
Example 3
3 + 8
Show the answer and working
Answer: 3 + 8 = 11
8 is 2 short of ten, so split 3 into 2 and 1: 8 + 2 = 10, 10 + 1 = 11
Example 4
9 + 7
Show the answer and working
Answer: 9 + 7 = 16
9 is 1 short of ten, so split 7 into 1 and 6: 9 + 1 = 10, 10 + 6 = 16
