Grams and kilograms
Check the unit, then what one small step is.
How to do it
Method
Check the unit, then what one small step is
100 ÷ 2 = 50; 1 step past 600 = 650 g
Another way
Count every step
50, 100, 150 … 650
In full
Grams (g) and kilograms (kg) measure weight: 1 kg = 1000 g. A coin weighs a few grams, an orange about 200 g, a bag of rice 5 kg — use grams for light things and kilograms for heavy ones. To read a scale, check whether it is in grams or kilograms, then see how far apart two numbered marks are and how many small steps lie between (100 ÷ 2 = 50 g a step). Count the steps the pointer is past a number: 1 step past 600 is 650 g. Or count every step from 0.

Example 2
2 kg = □ g
Show the answer and working
Answer: 2000
1 kg = 1000 g: 2 × 1000 = 2000.
Example 3
How heavy is the thing on the scale?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 550 g
Each 100 g has 2 steps of 50 g; the pointer is 1 step past the nearest number: 550 g.
