Stage 2 · Add & subtract strategies
Giving change
Count up from the price, like a shopkeeper.
How to do it
Method
Count up from the price, like a shopkeeper
$37 → $40 → $100: 3 + 60 = 63
Another way
Column subtraction
100 − 37 = 63
In full
Count up from the price, the way a shopkeeper does: a book is $37 and you pay $100. $37 → $40 is $3, $40 → $100 is $60, 3 + 60 = 63, so $63 change. Paying $50 works the same: $28 → $30 is $2, $30 → $50 is $20, 2 + 20 = 22, so $22 change. You can also write 100 − 37 = 63 and subtract in columns with a borrow; the answer is the same.
Worked examples
Have a go first, then open each one for the answer and the working.
Example 1
Ball $97, pay $100, change $?
Show the answer and working
Answer: Ball $97, pay $100, change $3
$97, paying $100: count up from the price, $97 → $100 is $3, 97 + 3 = 100, so $3 change
Example 2
Pen $12, pay $50, change $?
Show the answer and working
Answer: Pen $12, pay $50, change $38
$12, paying $50: count up from the price, $12 → $20 is $8, $20 → $50 is $30, 8 + 30 = 38, so $38 change
Example 3
Cake $11, pay $50, change $?
Show the answer and working
Answer: Cake $11, pay $50, change $39
$11, paying $50: count up from the price, $11 → $20 is $9, $20 → $50 is $30, 9 + 30 = 39, so $39 change
Example 4
Kite $33, pay $50, change $?
Show the answer and working
Answer: Kite $33, pay $50, change $17
$33, paying $50: count up from the price, $33 → $40 is $7, $40 → $50 is $10, 7 + 10 = 17, so $17 change
