Another way

In full
The four main directions are north, east, south and west. Facing north, east is on your right, west on your left and south behind you; north is opposite south, and east opposite west. Turning clockwise goes north → east → south → west, a right angle each time. Maps often put north at the top, but first look at where the compass arrow (N) points: that is north, then count clockwise for east, south and west. Or imagine standing on the map facing the arrow, and use your right and left hands.
