Decimals · Usually met around P4

Decimals in money and measures

1 L = 1000 mL, $1 = ten 10¢.

How to do it

Method

1 L = 1000 mL, $1 = ten 10¢

1.234 L = 1234 mL; $23 and 50¢ = $23.5

Another way

Place-value table

1.234 L = 1000 + 200 + 30 + 4 mL

In full

Money and measures are often written as decimals. $1 = 10 ten-cent coins, so 10¢ = $0.1 and $23 and 5 ten-cents is $23.5. 1 L = 1000 mL, 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 km = 1000 m, so 1 mL = 0.001 L: 1.234 L = 1234 mL, and 2 kg 50 g = 2.050 kg = 2.05 kg. 1 m = 100 cm: 1.35 m = 135 cm. Big unit to small, multiply by 1000 (or 100); small to big, divide by 1000 (or 100). Or use a place-value table: in 1.234 L the 1 is 1 L, and 2, 3, 4 are 200, 30 and 4 mL, 1234 mL in all.

  2. Example 2

    3.15 m = □ cm

    Show the answer and working

    Answer: 315

    1 m = 100 cm, so 3.15 × 100 = 315.
