Stage 4 · Division
Written division
Split it into parts the divisor goes into.
How to do it
Method
Split it into parts the divisor goes into
158 ÷ 4: 120 ÷ 4 = 30, 38 ÷ 4 = 9 … 2 → 39 … 2
Another way
Written division
15 ÷ 4 = 3 … 3, 38 ÷ 4 = 9 … 2 → 39 … 2
In full
Split the number into parts the divisor goes into easily, divide each, and add the quotients: 158 ÷ 4 → 158 = 120 + 38, 120 ÷ 4 = 30, 38 ÷ 4 = 9 remainder 2, 30 + 9 = 39, so the quotient is 39 and the remainder 2, written 158 ÷ 4 = 39 … 2. Check by multiplying: 4 × 39 = 156, 156 + 2 = 158. Another way is written division from the highest place: the 1 in the hundreds is too small for 4, so take 15, and 15 ÷ 4 is 3 remainder 3; bring down the 8 to make 38, and 38 ÷ 4 is 9 remainder 2 — the same answer. When a place is too small to divide, the quotient gets a 0 there: 612 ÷ 3 = 204. Each question says whether it asks for the quotient or the remainder; one that divides exactly asks for the quotient.

Example 1
24 ÷ 2 = ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 24 ÷ 2 = 12
24 ÷ 2: split it into 20 + 4, 20 ÷ 2 = 10, 4 ÷ 2 = 2, 10 + 2 = 12; so the quotient is 12
Example 2
71 ÷ 5 → quotient ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 71 ÷ 5 → quotient 14
71 ÷ 5: split it into 50 + 21, 50 ÷ 5 = 10, 21 ÷ 5: 5 × 4 = 20, 21 − 20 = 1, 10 + 4 = 14; so the quotient is 14 and the remainder 1
Example 3
339 ÷ 9 → rem ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 339 ÷ 9 → rem 6
339 ÷ 9: split it into 270 + 69, 270 ÷ 9 = 30, 69 ÷ 9: 9 × 7 = 63, 69 − 63 = 6, 30 + 7 = 37; so the quotient is 37 and the remainder 6
Example 4
430 ÷ 4 → quotient ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 430 ÷ 4 → quotient 107
430 ÷ 4: split it into 400 + 30, 400 ÷ 4 = 100, 30 ÷ 4: 4 × 7 = 28, 30 − 28 = 2, 100 + 7 = 107; so the quotient is 107 and the remainder 2
