Division: sharing, grouping and remainders · Usually met around P2
÷2, ÷5, ÷10
÷5: double it, then ÷10.
How to do it
Method
÷5: double it, then ÷10
35 ÷ 5 = 70 ÷ 10 = 7
Another way
Think multiplication
5 × 7 = 35, so 35 ÷ 5 = 7
In full
Division isn't new. It's multiplication asked the other way round: 35 ÷ 5 means 'five times what is 35?' Some shortcuts: a whole ten ÷10 just loses its zero. ÷5 is double, then ÷10 (35 ÷ 5 → 70 → 7). ÷2 is halving.
