Stage 4 · Division
Division with remainders
Find the biggest multiple that fits.
How to do it
Method
Find the biggest multiple that fits

Another way
Written division
38 ÷ 5 = 7 … 3
In full
Find the largest multiple that doesn't overshoot. 38 ÷ 5: the closest multiple of 5 under 38 is 35, so it goes 7 times, remainder 3. Written division also finds the quotient and remainder; the answer is the same. These questions ask only for the remainder.

Example 1
17 ÷ 4 → rem ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 17 ÷ 4 → rem 1
17 ÷ 4: the largest multiple of 4 not past 17 is 4 × 4 = 16, 17 − 16 = 1, so the remainder is 1
Example 2
62 ÷ 9 → rem ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 62 ÷ 9 → rem 8
62 ÷ 9: the largest multiple of 9 not past 62 is 9 × 6 = 54, 62 − 54 = 8, so the remainder is 8
Example 3
24 ÷ 9 → rem ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 24 ÷ 9 → rem 6
24 ÷ 9: the largest multiple of 9 not past 24 is 9 × 2 = 18, 24 − 18 = 6, so the remainder is 6
Example 4
68 ÷ 6 → rem ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 68 ÷ 6 → rem 2
68 ÷ 6: the largest multiple of 6 not past 68 is 6 × 11 = 66, 68 − 66 = 2, so the remainder is 2
