Stage 5 · Time & measures
Time between
Count in stretches: first to the o'clock.
How to do it
Method
Count in stretches: first to the o'clock
2:45 → 3:00 → 4:00 → 4:10: 15 + 60 + 10 = 85
Another way
Hours and minutes apart
Borrow an hour: 70 − 45 = 25, 3 − 2 = 1 → 1 h 25 min = 85 min
In full
Count it in stretches, no borrowing: first to the next o'clock, then whole hours, then on to the end time. 2:45 → 4:10: 2:45 → 3:00 is 15 minutes, 3:00 → 4:00 is 60 minutes, 4:00 → 4:10 is 10 minutes; 15 + 60 = 75, 75 + 10 = 85, so 85 minutes (1 hour = 60 minutes). Or subtract the hours and the minutes separately, borrowing 1 hour, that is 60 minutes, when the minutes run short: 4 h 10 min − 2 h 45 min → 3 h 70 min − 2 h 45 min = 1 h 25 min = 85 minutes — the same answer.
Worked examples
Have a go first, then open each one for the answer and the working.
Example 1
10:05 → 11:05 = ? min
Show the answer and working
Answer: 10:05 → 11:05 = 60 min
10:05 → 11:05: count in stretches, 10:05 → 11:00 is 55 minutes, 11:00 → 11:05 is 5 minutes, 55 + 5 = 60, so 60 minutes
Example 2
11:25 → 12:20 = ? min
Show the answer and working
Answer: 11:25 → 12:20 = 55 min
11:25 → 12:20: count in stretches, 11:25 → 12:00 is 35 minutes, 12:00 → 12:20 is 20 minutes, 35 + 20 = 55, so 55 minutes
Example 3
7:20 → 9:30 = ? min
Show the answer and working
Answer: 7:20 → 9:30 = 130 min
7:20 → 9:30: count in stretches, 7:20 → 8:00 is 40 minutes, 8:00 → 9:00 is 60 minutes, 9:00 → 9:30 is 30 minutes, 40 + 60 = 100, 100 + 30 = 130, so 130 minutes
Example 4
5:50 → 8:50 = ? min
Show the answer and working
Answer: 5:50 → 8:50 = 180 min
5:50 → 8:50: count in stretches, 5:50 → 6:00 is 10 minutes, 6:00 → 8:00 is 2 hours, 2 × 60 = 120 minutes, 8:00 → 8:50 is 50 minutes, 10 + 120 = 130, 130 + 50 = 180, so 180 minutes
