Reading and writing five-digit numbers
Use a place-value chart; 0 holds an empty place.
How to do it
Method
Use a place-value chart; 0 holds an empty place
3 ten-thousands, 5 thousands, 2 tens = 35020
Another way
Split and put together
30000 + 5000 + 20 = 35020
In full
From the left, a five-digit number has ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. Write each digit in a place-value chart, with a 0 to hold any empty place: 3 ten-thousands, 5 thousands and 2 tens make 35020. A digit is worth that many of its place: the 3 in 35020 is in the ten-thousands, so it stands for 30000. Read from the ten-thousands: 35020 is “thirty-five thousand and twenty”. Or split it into 30000 + 5000 + 20 and put it back together. You can count in thousands or ten-thousands: 38500, 39500, 40500. A number ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 is even.
