In full
Minutes measure time, and 1 hour = 60 minutes. Within one hour, take one minute number from the other: 8:15 to 8:50 is 50 − 15 = 35 minutes; or count the big steps the minute hand makes, 7 × 5 = 35. Across an hour, go to the hour first: 8:40 to 9:15 is 8:40 → 9:00, 20 minutes, then 9:00 → 9:15, 15 minutes, 35 in all. Finding an end time works the same way: 35 minutes after 8:40 is 20 minutes to 9:00 and 15 more, 9:15.
