Multiplying by a one-digit number · Usually met around P3
Three-digit × one-digit
Hundreds, tens, ones: multiply each, add.
How to do it
Method
Hundreds, tens, ones: multiply each, add
347 × 6 = 1800 + 240 + 42 = 2082
Another way
Column multiplication
7 × 6 = 42, write 2 carry 4; 4 × 6 + 4 = 28, write 8 carry 2; 3 × 6 + 2 = 20 → 2082
In full
Split the three-digit number into hundreds, tens and ones. Multiply each part by the one-digit number, then add: 347 × 6 → 300 × 6 = 1800, 40 × 6 = 240, 7 × 6 = 42, 1800 + 240 + 42 = 2082. A place with a 0 needs no multiplying: 305 × 4 → 300 × 4 = 1200, 5 × 4 = 20, 1200 + 20 = 1220. If the one-digit number comes first, nothing changes: 6 × 347 has the same product as 347 × 6. Estimate first to check: 347 is near 350, and 350 × 6 = 2100, so the answer should be near 2100. Another way is to multiply in columns from the ones, carrying into the next place: 7 × 6 = 42, write 2 carry 4; 4 × 6 + 4 = 28, write 8 carry 2; 3 × 6 + 2 = 20 → 2082.

Example 1
624 × 4
Show the answer and working
Answer: 624 × 4 = 2496
624 × 4: split 624 into 600 + 20 + 4, 600 × 4 = 2400, 20 × 4 = 80, 4 × 4 = 16, 2400 + 80 = 2480, 2480 + 16 = 2496
Example 2
852 × 2
Show the answer and working
Answer: 852 × 2 = 1704
852 × 2: split 852 into 800 + 50 + 2, 800 × 2 = 1600, 50 × 2 = 100, 2 × 2 = 4, 1600 + 100 = 1700, 1700 + 4 = 1704
Example 3
176 × 6
Show the answer and working
Answer: 176 × 6 = 1056
176 × 6: split 176 into 100 + 70 + 6, 100 × 6 = 600, 70 × 6 = 420, 6 × 6 = 36, 600 + 420 = 1020, 1020 + 36 = 1056
