Numbers to 20 · Usually met around P1

Counting, reading and writing to 20

Ring a group of 10, then count the rest.

How to do it

Method

Ring a group of 10, then count the rest

1 ten and 4 ones = 14 (fourteen)

Another way

Ten frames

A full frame 10, the other 4 → 14

In full

When counting things, touch each one as you count it and never count it twice: the last number you say is how many there are. With many things, count out a group of 10 first, then count the rest: 1 ten and 4 ones make 14, read “fourteen”. Every number from 11 to 19 is ten and some more: a 1 in the tens place, then the ones. 20 is 2 tens. Or use ten frames: one full frame is 10, then see how many are in the second.
