One picture or one square stands for 1.
How to do it
Method
One picture or one square stands for 1
Apples 9, bananas 4: 9 − 4 = 5
Another way
Match one to one
5 left over after matching
In full
In a pictogram each picture stands for 1, and in a block graph each square stands for 1: count the pictures in a row, or the squares in a stack, to get that item's number. To compare two items, take away: apples 9, bananas 4, 9 − 4 = 5, so 5 more chose apples; to find both together, add: 9 + 4 = 13. Or match the pictures in the two rows one to one: the ones left over are the difference. The same answer.
