Stage 1 · Number sense
Place value to 1000
Its place tells you what a digit is worth.
How to do it
Method
Its place tells you what a digit is worth
3 hundreds 4 tens 5 ones: 300 + 40 + 5 = 345
Another way
Place-value chart
Hundreds 3, tens 4, ones 5 → 345
In full
A digit's worth comes from its place: the ones digit counts ones, the tens digit tens, the hundreds digit hundreds. In 457 the 4 is in the hundreds place and stands for 400, the 5 in the tens place for 50, the 7 in the ones place for 7; 457 = 400 + 50 + 7. Building a number from its places: 3 hundreds 4 tens 5 ones puts 3, 4 and 5 in the hundreds, tens and ones → 345; with no tens, the tens place holds a 0: 3 hundreds 5 ones = 305, not 35. Ten tens make a hundred. 100 more than 457: the hundreds digit goes up 1 → 557; 10 more, the tens digit → 467; 1 less, the ones digit goes down 1 → 456. When the tens digit is 9, 10 more carries: 10 more than 395 is 405. Another way is to lay each place out with cubes, rods and flats, or on a place-value chart; the answer is the same.
