Two-digit adding and taking away · Usually met around P1
Two-digit subtraction with regrouping
Take the tens first, then the ones.
How to do it
Method
Take the tens first, then the ones
63 − 28 = 63 − 20 − 8 = 43 − 8 = 35
Another way
Column subtraction
Ones: borrow a ten, 13 − 8 = 5; tens 5 − 2 = 3 → 35
In full
63 − 28 → take the tens first, 63−20=43, then the ones, 43−8=35. Or move both numbers up by 2 → 65 − 30 = 35, and the borrow disappears. Moving both numbers by the same amount doesn't change the gap. That's the handiest thing to know about subtraction. Column subtraction with a borrow works too.
Worked examples
Have a go first, then open each one for the answer and the working.
Example 1
89 − 61
Show the answer and working
Answer: 89 − 61 = 28
Left to right, take away the tens first: 89 − 60 = 29, then the ones: 29 − 1 = 28
Example 2
80 − 57
Show the answer and working
Answer: 80 − 57 = 23
Left to right, take away the tens first: 80 − 50 = 30, then the ones: 30 − 7 = 23
Example 3
45 − 27
Show the answer and working
Answer: 45 − 27 = 18
Left to right, take away the tens first: 45 − 20 = 25, then the ones: 25 − 7 = 18
