Clocks and time: olympiad question 1

An easy question on clocks and time for P2–P3, with a step-by-step solution, diagrams and the answer. Every year of the Hua Xia Cup has clock questions, from time passed in P1 to the angle between the hands in P6.

The question

Ming started revising at 8:50 am and finished at 9:50 am the same day.

How many minutes did he spend revising?

Show the hints (2)
  1. Hint 1: First work out how many minutes there are from 8:50 am to 9:00 am.
  2. Hint 2: An hour is sixty minutes. Add up the minutes in each part.

Worked solution

Have a go first, then read the solution step by step.

  1. 1.8:50 am to 9:00 am: 60 − 50 = 10 minutes.
  2. 2.9:00 am to 9:50 am: 50 minutes.
  3. 3.In all 10 + 50 = 60 minutes.
  4. ⚠️Common mistake: subtracting the times like ordinary numbers, 950 − 850 = 100. An hour has 60 minutes, not 100.

Answer: 60 minutes
