Queues: olympiad question 2

An easy question on queues for P1–P2, with a step-by-step solution, diagrams and the answer. Queue questions are already in the Hua Xia Cup's P1 and P2 first rounds, and the P4 papers add square formations.

The question

Pupils queue in single file for ice cream.

Counting from the front, Ming is 5th and May is 10th.

How many children are between Ming and May?

Show the hints (2)
  1. Hint 1: Try a small case: which places lie between second and fifth?
  2. Hint 2: "Between" leaves out Ming and May themselves.

Worked solution

Have a go first, then read the solution step by step.

  1. 1.Between them are places 6 to 9.
  2. 2.10 − 5 = 5 counts May too; take her off: 5 − 1 = 4.
  3. ⚠️Common mistake: answering 5, counting May as "between".
