Dividing by a one-digit number · Usually met around P3
Short division
Split it into parts the divisor goes into.
How to do it
Method
Split it into parts the divisor goes into
158 ÷ 4: 120 ÷ 4 = 30, 38 ÷ 4 = 9 … 2 → 39 … 2
Another way
Written division
15 ÷ 4 = 3 … 3, 38 ÷ 4 = 9 … 2 → 39 … 2
In full
Split the number into parts the divisor goes into easily. Divide each part, then add the answers. 158 ÷ 4 → 158 = 120 + 38. 120 ÷ 4 = 30, and 38 ÷ 4 = 9 remainder 2. 30 + 9 = 39, so the quotient is 39 and the remainder is 2. We write this as 158 ÷ 4 = 39 … 2. Check by multiplying: 4 × 39 = 156, 156 + 2 = 158. Another way is written division, starting from the highest place. The 1 in the hundreds is too small for 4, so take 15. 15 ÷ 4 is 3 remainder 3. Bring down the 8 to make 38, and 38 ÷ 4 is 9 remainder 2. When a place is too small to divide, the quotient gets a 0 there: 612 ÷ 3 = 204. Each question tells you whether it wants the quotient or the remainder. If it divides exactly, it wants the quotient.
Worked examples

Example 1
720 ÷ 8 = ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 720 ÷ 8 = 90
720 ÷ 8: 720 ÷ 8 = 90; so the quotient is 90
Example 2
92 ÷ 3 = ? … 2
Show the answer and working
Answer: 92 ÷ 3 = 30 … 2
92 ÷ 3: split it into 90 + 2, 90 ÷ 3 = 30, 2 is left, less than 3: the remainder; so the quotient is 30 and the remainder 2
Example 3
51 ÷ 3 = ?
Show the answer and working
Answer: 51 ÷ 3 = 17
51 ÷ 3: split it into 30 + 21, 30 ÷ 3 = 10, 21 ÷ 3 = 7, 10 + 7 = 17; so the quotient is 17
