Dividing by a one-digit number · Usually met around P3
Four-digit numbers divided by one digit
Carry each place's remainder to the next place.
How to do it
Method
Carry each place's remainder to the next place
7452 ÷ 6 = 1242
Another way
Split into easy parts
6000 ÷ 6 + 1200 ÷ 6 + 240 ÷ 6 + 12 ÷ 6 = 1242
In full
Short division starts at the highest place, and whatever is left over from one place joins the next place before you divide again. 7452 ÷ 6: the thousands, 7 ÷ 6 = 1 … 1. The 1 left over and the 4 hundreds make 14, and 14 ÷ 6 = 2 … 2. The 2 and the 5 tens make 25, and 25 ÷ 6 = 4 … 1. The 1 and the 2 ones make 12, and 12 ÷ 6 = 2. The quotient is 1242. If the thousands digit is too small, the quotient starts in the hundreds: 2736 ÷ 4 = 684. If a place in the middle is too small, the quotient gets a 0 there: 6324 ÷ 3 = 2108. Another way: split the number into parts the divisor goes into easily. 7452 = 6000 + 1200 + 240 + 12; each divided by 6 gives 1000, 200, 40 and 2, which add up to 1242. To check, multiply back: 6 × 1242 = 7452, then add any remainder.

Example 1
9405 ÷ 8 = □ … □
Fill in each box
Show the answer and working
Answer: 1175,5
Divide down to the ones; 5 is left at the end: quotient 1175, remainder 5. Check: 8 × 1175 = 9400, 9400 + 5 = 9405.
Example 2
What is the quotient of 9828 ÷ 9?
- A. 192
- B. 1093
- C. 1092
- D. 10920
Choose the right answer
Show the answer and working
Answer: C. 1092
Where a place is too small, the quotient gets a 0: 9828 ÷ 9 = 1092.
Example 3
5804 ÷ 2 = □
Show the answer and working
Answer: 2902
Divide place by place; one place in the middle is too small for 2, so the quotient has a 0 there: 2902. Check: 2 × 2902 = 5804.
