Method
Its place tells you what a digit is worth

4 rods 7 cubes → 47
In full
What a digit is worth depends on its place: a digit in the tens place stands for that many tens, one in the ones place for that many ones. In 47, the 4 is in the tens place and stands for 40; the 7 is in the ones place and stands for 7; 47 = 40 + 7. To build a number from tens and ones, 4 tens 7 ones: write 4 in the tens place and 7 in the ones → 47; with no ones, write 0 in the ones place: 5 tens are 50. Ten tens make a hundred. 10 more than 47: add 1 to the tens → 57; 1 more: add 1 to the ones → 48. If the ones digit is 9, one more carries: 1 more than 39 is 40. Or lay it out with rods and cubes, a rod a ten and a cube a one, and count them: the same answer.
