Stage 3 · Times tables
×6 and ×9
×6: ×3 doubled. ×9: ×10 less one lot.
How to do it
Method
×6: ×3 doubled. ×9: ×10 less one lot
7 × 6 = 21 × 2 = 42, 7 × 9 = 70 − 7 = 63
Another way
Learn the table
7 × 8 = 56, 7 × 9 = 56 + 7 = 63
In full
×6 is ×3 then double (7×6 → 21 → 42). ×9 is ×10 minus one lot (7×9 → 70 − 7 = 63). The digits of any multiple of 9 add up to a multiple of 9 (63 → 6 + 3 = 9; 99 → 9 + 9 = 18) — a free check, though it catches some slips, not all: 72 also passes. Repeated addition or learning the table by heart works too; the answers are the same.
