Stage 3 · Times tables
×7 and ×8
×8: double three times. ×7: ×5 + ×2.
How to do it
Method
×8: double three times. ×7: ×5 + ×2
7 × 8 = 14 × 2 × 2 = 28 × 2 = 56
Another way
Learn the table
7 × 7 = 49, 7 × 8 = 49 + 7 = 56
In full
This is where most people stall. ×8 is double three times (7×8 → 14 → 28 → 56). ×7 is ×5 plus ×2 (6×7 → 30 + 12 = 42). Remember 7×8=56 as the run '5, 6, 7, 8'. Repeated addition or learning the table by heart works too; the answers are the same.
