Dividing decimals; fractions to decimals · Usually met around P6
Mixed operations with decimals
Brackets, then × ÷, then + −.
How to do it
Method
Brackets, then × ÷, then + −
1.5 + 2.4 × 3 = 1.5 + 7.2 = 8.7
Another way
Join the same multiplier
2.5 × 3.7 + 2.5 × 6.3 = 2.5 × 10 = 25
In full
The order is the same as with whole numbers: brackets first, then × and ÷, then + and −, and steps at the same level from left to right. Do each step the decimal way: line up the points to add or take away; to multiply, multiply as whole numbers, then count the decimal places; to divide by a decimal, move both points right until the divisor is whole. 1.5 + 2.4 × 3: first 2.4 × 3 = 7.2, then 1.5 + 7.2 = 8.7. Shortcuts: the same number multiplied twice can be joined, 2.5 × 3.7 + 2.5 × 6.3 = 2.5 × (3.7 + 6.3) = 2.5 × 10 = 25; pairs such as 0.25 × 4 = 1 and 1.25 × 8 = 10 can be multiplied first. Check by estimating: 1.5 + 2.4 × 3 is about 2 + 2 × 3 = 8, so 8.7 makes sense.
Worked examples
Have a go first, then open each one for the answer and the working.
Example 1
7.1 + 2.8 × 3 = □
Show the answer and working
Answer: 15.5
Multiply first: 2.8 × 3 = 8.4, then 7.1 + 8.4 = 15.5.
Example 2
(35.2 − 3.6) ÷ 4 = □
Show the answer and working
Answer: 7.9
Brackets first: 35.2 − 3.6 = 31.6, then 31.6 ÷ 4 = 7.9.
Example 3
3 + 1.4 × 5 = 22
True or false?
Show the answer and working
Answer: False
Multiply first: 1.4 × 5 = 7, then 3 + 7 = 10.
