Dividing decimals; fractions to decimals · Usually met around P6

Dividing to an approximate answer

Divide one place further, then round.

How to do it

Method

Divide one place further, then round

20 ÷ 7 = 2.85… ≈ 2.9

Another way

Round up or down by the situation

18 ÷ 4 = 4.5: 5 boxes to pack them all, only 4 made

In full

When a division doesn't come out exactly, give an approximate answer. To one decimal place (the tenths), divide to the second decimal place; to two decimal places (the hundredths), divide to the third; then look at that extra digit: 0 to 4, drop it; 5 to 9, add one to the digit before it (rounding). 20 ÷ 7 = 2.85…; to one decimal place the second digit is 5, so round up: about 2.9. Or look at the remainder: 20 ÷ 7 leaves 0.4 at 2.8, and 0.4 is more than half of 7 tenths (0.35), so round up. In a word problem, think about the situation: to pack everything, one more box is needed even when it won't be full (round up): 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5 needs 5 boxes; to make whole things, a part that isn't enough doesn't count (round down): 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5 makes only 4. Check: the answer times the divisor should be close to the number divided: 2.9 × 7 = 20.3.

Worked examples

Have a go first, then open each one for the answer and the working.

  1. Example 1

    6.2 ÷ 6 = □ (to 2 decimal places)

    Show the answer and working

    Answer: 1.03

Divide to the third decimal place, then round to the second: 1.03.

  2. Example 2

What is 8.4 ÷ 0.9 to the nearest tenth?

    Show the answer and working

    Answer: 9.3

The tenths are the first decimal place: divide 84 ÷ 9 to the second place, then round: 9.3.

  3. Example 3

    7.4 ÷ 3 to 2 decimal places is 2.47.

    True or false?

    Show the answer and working

    Answer: True

Divide to the third decimal place; it is 5 or more, so round up: 2.47.
