Stage 3 · Times tables
×11 and ×12
×12 is ×10 plus ×2.
How to do it
Method
×12 is ×10 plus ×2
7 × 12 = 70 + 14 = 84
Another way
Column multiplication
Ones 2 × 7 = 14, write 4, carry 1; tens 1 × 7 + 1 = 8 → 84
In full
×11 up to 9 just repeats the digit (7×11=77); for 10, 11 and 12, ×11 is ×10 plus one more lot (12×11 → 120 + 12 = 132). ×12 is ×10 plus ×2: 7×12 → 70 + 14 = 84. Splitting into 'ten lots plus two lots' beats memorising the twelves. ×11 and ×12 can also be worked in columns, with the same answers.
